Welcome aboard,
Africa’s ocean economy is growing rapidly, but awareness of the careers, opportunities, pathways, innovations, and leadership shaping the sector remains limited.
According to the African Union Blue Economy Strategy, sustainable ocean sectors are projected to generate a staggering 57 million direct jobs and an annual economic value of $405 billion across the continent by 2030. Yet, millions of young Africans remain entirely blind to these career pipelines.
By the time regional frameworks hit full stride, sustainable ocean sectors will support the livelihoods of over 5% of the total African population.
This isn’t just a local trend; it is a global shift. The global sustainable ocean economy is projected to reach $3 Trillion by 2030, supporting tens of millions of new livelihoods worldwide.
Africa, with its 47,000 kilometers of coastline and 85 commercial ports, is positioned to lead this global workforce demand.
Our core mission is to solve a critical, tangible problem: The chronic information and exposure gap that locks young Africans out of the maritime workforce. We aim to connect them to the opportunities, careers, innovations and leaders shaping this industry.
We serve as a vital, visible bridge for inspiring African youth by highlighting trailblazers and captains of industry, exposing them to the systems and industries running this machinery and mapping clear career pathways into the global most lucrative economic frontier.
But long before it became a mission-driven enterprise, One Global Ocean began as a simple, daily curiosity.
The Spark: Dismantling the Intimidating Machine
When I moved to Cape Town a few years ago, I had the unique privilege of driving directly through the working Port of Cape Town for several months to drop someone off. Day after day, I was exposed to the sheer magnitude and vibrant activity that port life has to offer. It was a world entirely hidden from the mainland, and it was the exact moment my fascination with the blue economy was born.
These days, I still drive past the port every morning and evening during my daily commute. While I no longer have the privilege of being up close and personal with the inner workings of the docks, that daily view never lost its grip on me.
As a journalist and communications specialist, my natural instinct took over. I wanted to understand the muscle in the underbelly of this monstrous facility. Every single day, I watched a mesmerizing hive of activity—massive cranes swinging into the sky, colossal container ships docking from international waters, and fleets of trucks moving cargo in a perfectly timed dance.
Yet, from the outside, there was very little visibility of the actual human beings behind these massive machineries.
To the untrained eye, the ships, steel containers, and industrial machinery appear prominent, cold, and intimidating. For a long time, my own mind struggled to connect the sheer scale of the hardware to the living, breathing people running it. This industrial engine doesn’t just move metal; it lucratively powers global economies, facilitates international trade, and empowers human lives all over the world.
I realized I couldn’t be the only one looking over the dock walls, wanting to unpack the many layers of the maritime industry. More importantly, I realized that millions of young African graduates and young adults are completely blind to these massive economic engines simply because traditional maritime media is locked behind dry, academic, and corporate jargon.
The generation that needs these jobs the most cannot choose a career path they don’t know exists. And so, One Global Ocean was born to change that.
Our Vision: Expanding the Horizon
What started as a curiosity-driven exploration into the hidden economies behind the shipping lanes has evolved into Africa’s definitive maritime information platform. We believe that to truly understand the blue economy, we have to look at the entire ecosystem, from hard industrial trade to the pure, untamed joy of the ocean itself.
The vision is clear: To ensure that every African can see a place for themselves in the ocean economy.
From ports and shipping routes to coastal tourism, infrastructure, and innovation, this platform examines the vital intersections of trade, leadership, mobility, development, and youth job creation across Africa and globally.
