I notice it every time I arrive at the coastal destination. As soon as I turn my face towards the ocean and take deep inhale of the salty smell of the ocean. I notice that my breathing immediately slows down. My shoulders soften. The mental chatter begins to fade into the background as the rhythm of the waves takes over. It’s as if the sea gently reminds me that we are on a short break now, you can exhale.
Perhaps that’s why I keep returning to coastal destinations.
Not because I need another holiday, but because I need to reconnect with myself.
For many of us, especially in midlife, travel becomes less about ticking destinations off a bucket list and more about finding places that restore us.
I am discovering that Africa offers those places in abundance.
Thirty-eight of Africa’s fifty-four countries have coastlines, stretching along the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Together, they form one of the world’s richest collections of coastal destinations, offering everything from remote islands and marine parks to vibrant fishing villages and cosmopolitan waterfronts.
Yet too often we dream of beaches thousands of kilometres away while overlooking the extraordinary coastlines on our own continent.
Why the Coast Always Feels Good
Scientists have long studied the relationship between nature and our wellbeing, and increasingly, research points to the powerful effect of being near water. Marine biologist Dr Wallace J. Nichols popularised the idea of the Blue Mind – a calm, meditative state that many people experience when they are close to oceans, lakes or rivers.
But long before science gave it a name, many of us simply knew how the sea made us feel.
Calmer. Lighter.More present.
The coast encourages us to slow down in ways that modern life rarely allows. We walk instead of rushing. We notice birds circling overhead. We watch fishing boats return to harbour. We pause for sunsets instead of checking emails.
These small moments have a remarkable way of bringing us back to ourselves.
For me, the ocean has become more than a destination. It has become a teacher.
It reminds me that there are seasons in life, just as there are tides. That rest is productive. That movement doesn’t always have to be fast to be meaningful.
